hey Nik.
thanks for adding as friend on facebook.
I have just resubscribed to your show , now I realise it is still going. ;-)

I dunno if I can catch up on the entire 2yrs since i last heard it... but we'll see.
I have 4-5hrs/night to listen at work, so that's good.

i've also started a podcast now. Dunno if Brisbane is quite as exciting as gay Parie though!!
all the best. have a chocolate pain for me.

Ahh..! Glad you chose Radiohead "Creep". It reminds me of you for some reason (!!) - but only because you used to play it at uni a fair bit.

Reminded me of university too... all those evenings and weekends in the computer labs!!

My Dear Friend Nik, I have missed you terribly as of late. My time does not permit me to be listening to podcasts any more. It's no excuse. And I loved them. But I just have so many blogs that I read daily. Plus a new puppy to raise! I just want you to know that I've been thinking of you. As usual, I wish you wellness, wholeness, and lots of peace and good times. My apologies for being away from emailing you for so long. You know you're my friend. NO matter the time or space. Hugs.

I recently discovered your podcast and needed to tell you how much I enjoy it. Sitting at work yesterday I was listening to your recording of the "Paris Beach" and it made my heart a little lighter while the cold of February screams outside in Indiana. Thank you for bringing some sunshine into my cubicle.

We're considering a trip to Frankfurt in mid-February and were wondering if you guys may be able to come up for a night or two to visit. Last minute, I know.
Nik, it would be an understatement to say that I've been remiss in listening to your amazing podcasts and commenting. I have no excuse. I do want you to know how much I appreciate your friendship. And that I wish you and Bruno the very best of years ahead. 2008 should be full of blessings, peaceful times, and happiness for you both. Hugs from Portland.

What do you think of Rennes? Lovely old timber buildings in the centre of the town; plus a lot of modern striking architecture - great place to work!

Hi Nik,

I enjoyed your last podcast and listened to it some time ago, but haven't commented yet. Now that I'm in Canada going crazy around every relative I have (and the bard are closed) I took some time to catch up on email. Wishing you and Bruno all the best in 08 and love the podcasts!

My mom gave us all copies of Bill O'Rielly's book Culture Warriors. Need i say more?

The Raclette sounds good ..... all three of my favourite food groups - meat, potato, and cheese. I've actually got one of those electric raclette grill thingys stashed away somewhere in the kitchen. I've missed your podcasts and for you to return with one of the soundscenes, well this is a double treat.

Hey Nik I was alerted to your podcast on Facebook as you noticed:) It was great to hear from you again, even if you were just taking out the trash. I laughed when you had to go back and get a warmer coat. I hope you and Bruno enjoy some time together over Christmas break and you can take a rest from your crazy schedule:)

Glad to hear you back! You know how much I enjoy those sounds of the streets in Paris. Love hearing all those background noises. I try to picture in my mind what the streets look like as you walk around. The kids playing in the background was cool too.

Happy Holidays to you and Bruno!

I love it when you talk about some of the ordinary things you face, like the strikes. It makes it more real than just hearing about it in the news.

But it's also great to hear about things going on with you, like your birthday. It's fun to get to share that with you.

In the news I've been hearing about riots in France. Have you been affected by that?

Oh, and thanks for the message on the comment line--I really appreciate it!

Excellent show Nik. Turning 30 didn't treat you too bad now, did it? I don't know how you are coping with all the transportation issues in Paris. It would have drove me mad. I'm too inpatient I guess. I hope the strike ends soon and you can get on with your life.

Hi Nik. I'm just really impressed by your description of the galère of commuting from La Défense. The fact that on the first day you found some charm in the strike (which is what American Francophiles typically feel, by the way) made it all the more worse when the weather turned cold the next night and you were forced, after hours on a bus, to pedal a Vélib in the cold, dark night the rest of the way home. I hope the strikes end soon. Your description of the elegant 16th arrondissement brought back memories, as my partner and I stayed there a long time ago on the rue St. Didier in a budget hotel that has since been torn down. There was even a working class cafe with a jukebox down the street. Enjoyed hearing about your birthday too and very much liked the chanson you played at the end of the show.

Hey Nik, a very Happy Birthday to you, and welcome back--you were definitely missed! Here's my birthday tip: Throw yourself a 31st birthday party. Like Dave, I found 31 to be a harder birthday, but the party helped.

Hope you can stick around for a while, you were missed.

Hey James, I think it was more you putting up with me!! Major disappointment, glum face and all. Your invitation sounds fab though, I'll treat you to the Vélib if you buy me dinner. Love to the family.

Archerr, thanks for the early wishes. You are the first :) I may fade in and out in terms of podcasting, but I'm not going far!!! Thanks for your support.

Glad to hear you back on the "internet-waves". Thanks for putting me up last week (or should that be putting up with me?!). Next time I'm over, let's do that restaurant and try out the Vélibs!

Welcome back! Glad you decided not to give up pocasting!

Congrats on the changes in your job. I'm sure things have settled down and you prefer not doing all that traveling.

An early Happy Birthday to you! So glad to hear you will be making the switch to Mac with your birthday and Christmas money. I hope you get enough to get a nice lap top. I'm sure you're ready to get started with it.

Ahh...the lazy days of summer in the city! When am I going to be able to experience Paris....soon, I hope. As usual, you've done a marvelous job of making us feel like we're right there with you....I looked at the photos while listening...the accordion music and photos all added up to a perfect summer day experience! I don't think that a link to where we can buy a pair of those flip flops would be a bad idea....and, of course, a complimentary personal photo. Hugs. Happy end of summer.

That was such a wonderful soundscape tour. Sounded like a wonderful way to spend the day. Thanks for sharing it with us. Oh and I REALLY loved the Winston Giles Orchestra tune! I'm going to search them out.
Enjoy the rest of your August!

Hi Nik,

I'm having a quiet day at the office (it seems that all my French colleagues have joined you at the coast so I don't have much to do!) and i thought I'd catch up with your podcasts.

Loved this one about the wine. From my time in France, I think that understanding a little bit about French wine really helps get to know the country and its people. If you get to know the grapes and regions (as you'll remember I just spend half my life with my nose buried in a map of France) you can always use the knowledge in all sorts of unlikely situations.

Wine seems to play such a big part of people's lives in France... I remember when I first started work over there and I got talking to someone at some work function and we just drifted into this slightly drunken conversation about wine (we were drinking French wine obviously!). it really helped me integrate myself into the company somehow! I don't know, I'm not sure I'm explaining what I mean very well, but being able to keep up, even on a basic level about cépages, régions and millésimes seems to really help. If you can name drop a few really obscure appellations, then that really helps!!

I have to say that I am a big fan of the moelleux whites from the Loire... Coteaux du Layon being my favourite. If you really want to name drop, try talking about the Bonnezeaux and Quarts de Chaumes appellations... :)

Hope you have/had a really good time wandering around France. V jealous.

The beach sounds wonderful! I can't believe they brought in all that sand and created a beach right there in Paris. This would have made a great video. The pictures gives me a good idea of what it's like though. You should have included a picture of your feet in your flip flops. hehehe

It's nice to hear your voice at the mic sometimes as well as on the streets. The wine you were having sounded nice.

You vacation plans sound wonderful! I bet the boyfriend and I would love it. Camping out in the tent sounds fun too. I'm sure you'll learn a lot about wines while on your vacation.

Don't worry about the frequency of your podcast. You know we'll listen when you do post a podcast. Podcast when you feel it. Look forward to any podcasts you create while on your vacation.

The boyfriend and I know more about Virginia wines than we do from France. The boyfriend actually knows more than I do about French wines. The discussions about the French wine was very informative.

Nik,

Have a great vacation! Thanks for the podcasts, they are informative, humorous and I love your personal podcasts because they are so relaxing. Please don't feel any pressure to podcast, as I would hate to see you burn out! Podcast as you can and we will be listening. As I listen to you translate the French Wine leaflet it reminds me that my niece is who 5 years old is bilingual in French and English! I can't wait to hear about your vacation.

Thanks for the support guys!

I think hourly car rental is another excellent greener way of getting around. Within Paris I have no need for a car, but it’d be nice to have easy access to one for certain errands or trips out. I see that they have started an hourly rental / car sharing system called Okigo at 4€/hour (120 € annual fee). I’ve not tried it yet, but it doesn’t seem as widespread as the US system.

Of course there have been reports of stealing and vandalism of the bikes. I saw a picture of a Vélib in a fountain the other day!! However, to rent a bike you leave a deposit of 150 € so I guess it should make some people think twice before destroying them?! And I guess a certain amount of repair and renewal is budgeted in the business plan.

Nik this was a really cool podcast! I was worried about you went you entered the roundabouts! The bikes are a great idea it would be all downhill for me to work, but home would mean a huge climb...Seattle is probably too hilly for a bike system, but what an awesome idea. I think the bikes would probably all be stolen here and the electronic systems damaged:) They are building a monorail system in Seattle to relieve congestion, but it's one of those pork barrel projects that has been in the works for several years and is way over budget so I doubt it will pay off.

The idea of renting bikes by the half hour is phenomenal. I would use it to ride to work instead of the subway if it was available.

But the bikes would probably be stolen before you even tried to rent one. I had a bike years ago and I had locked the front wheel to the banister on the stairs in my building just outside my apartment and one day when I came out, all that was left was the front wheel and the lock. I never bothered to replace it since bikes are a high theft item here in the city.

We have a similar system here in DC for automobiles. Both ZipCar and FlexCar allow you to rent a car or SUV by the hour and they have designated parking spots reserved for them on the street and in parking lots. It's a minimum of $8.95/hour US Dollars to rent the vehicle but that includes the fuel and insurance as you drive around running your errands to the suburbs.

Great show, as usual, Nik! Thanks for mentioning my blog and the post I did some time ago about Vélib. Last winter, I wouldn't have imagined that they could get the system in place so soon and so extensively. Can't wait to try it sometime!

Kind of wishing we'd done the Eye when we were there..but kind of NOT! It looks wild and scary up there. They must shut it down in high wind, eh? Loved the music and -- of course -- the view is awesome.

Hey Nik--I just realised I forgot to comment on this podcast (your voicemail on Archerr's podcast reminded me). This was a really interesting episode, because I've been fascinated by high-speed rail ever since I heard about the TGV many years ago. I hope you find a flat you love!

Nik

Another great show and was sadden you had a tough time at the wedding and how you were subjected to the comments and not having a place to sit for the meal. It is really sad that this type of beahavior exists and you and your dad show true class by being above it all. I had a recent type of homophobia as well at my mom and dad's 50th anniversary and if you listen to my ep 148 you can hear all about it.

I would have to say that I found Washingtonbryan's comment interesting to read as well and I am happy to read that his father and brother were so supportive and not accepting any negative behavior.

Massive amounts of hugs from a crazy redhead!

Hey Nik,
Sorry to hear you didn't get the flat you wanted. It's such a bummer when you find a place you really like and it doesn't work out. Luckily I found the flat (or Condo as we call it) I fell in love with 11 years ago and was able to negotiate a price that was reasonable for both myself and the seller at the time.

I found it funny that in France you called the kitchen you described as "An American Kitchen". That is so far from the truth. We call the kitchen you described as a "Gally Kitchen" as that type of kitchen is usually found on a boat house or in a very small flat.

Your talk about the train was fascinating. I had not heard that France had developed a train that would reach that speed. That is just amazing and I loved listening to the audio you included. In America, we can't get trains that go more that 60 miles per hour because our only train system for cross city travel is Amtrak, and it has to be heavily subsidized by the government to keep it going since most people travel by air.

Great to hear from you and I hope you find the perfect flat that is within your price range. Don't be afraid to look in the undesirable neighborhoods like I did back in 1996. It was rough for a couple of years, but now my neighborhood is the place to live in Washington DC.

Looking forward to your next podcast.

It's wonderful to hear from you again. I love the binaural mics-- they give a real feeling of space, of being there.

Good luck in your purchase of a flat. I've always found the search for a place to live very stressful. I hope things go smoothly.

awesome show, I hope you get the flat! When I first moved to WDC area on 02 every house i bid on was outbid within hours. This went on for months....Finally I had to bite the bullet and make a decision and offer within hours of seeing a place, I hated it after I moved in:) Seattle was a much better market, a buyers market. Good luck

Absolutely fascinating! I loved this podcast. Loved hearing the boarding announcements and the sound of the train as it whooshed along. You've got a creative mind and spirit that allows us all to experience things that we may never get to otherwise. Thanks for allowing us to "be there" with you. Your friend in life.....

I loved this show, Nik. Binaural recordings--I had to look around to make sure someone wasn't someone in the room talking to me in French....

I once saw a documentary on the construction of the tunnel, but I'm glad you added the other facts to kind of "round out" the picture. I'm with Archerr--it sounds intriguing, but being that far underground AND under water? Hm, I'd have to think about that.

Glad to hear that you and Bruno are working through things.

Look forward to your next podcast!

Hi Nik,

Juliet and I listened to your podcast yesterday morning in bed! We had an hour or so of time to ourselves once Delphine had decided she didn't want feeding anymore and that she might actually go to sleep!

Thanks for your congrats, Delphine has already made it on to the www!!!

Also enjoyed your chunnel-cast... and found the bit you did from the toilet highly amusing!

Talk soon,
James

Thanks for the update on things. That was an interesting ride on the chunnel train. I didn't know that much about it and you certainly gave us lots of information. Sounds like something I might like if I can get over being so far underground.

Nik what a great podcast, sounded like you were live from the French Quarter in New Orleans while you were cutting cheese for Bruno! Sounds like you guys had a nice romantic evening. The tunnel sounds (and the toilet cast) was also interesting. It was nice to catch up with you and hear about what's been going on. I also love the Pet Shop Boys!

Nik

I truly love your show and appreciated your show on the election as well as being honest about how things are going with you and Bruno. Being a man who was in a long term relationship I can't agree more with the comments that have been left and hope that you two will find the way to make it work. Being a couple is always a struggle and it takes two to make it work and the best advice I can give as I have said on my show too many times is to be able to communicate to each other and not to be afraid to do so. My ex refused to communicate and it began to hurt me that after being with him for so long that he didn't trust me enough to tell me what he was going through at the time. That is why I have made a huge effort not to make the same mistakes with my love of my life Joe - he shows me each day in small ways how much he cares for me and have talked about it in my show.

I send much love to you and Bruno and look forward to hearing your next show!

Hugs
